It is impossible to tell the full impact of an
adult’s taking time to mentor a child or for
successful couples to serve as an example for
others in new marriages.

This is especially true for communities like
the African American where only 34%of children
grow up in families where the parents are
married.

Or too many kids grow up as fatherless children
of men who have abdicated their responsibility
to be dads and providers, not just sperm donors.

My first guest today is Elvin Dowling, author of
the soon-to-be-released book License to Live.

He got his first mentor at the age of 15.

By the age of 19, both his brothers and all of his
first cousins had been killed by drugs or in gang
violence.

Not Elvin.

Because various church members and teachers as
well as his mentor saw his potential, he found a
way to avoid his relatives’ violent endings.

He went on to become Chief of Staff of the National
Urban League. Elvin is esteemed and has had the honor
of meeting four Presidents of the United States.

As a result of his experience, Elvin vowed that
he would mentor one child per year.

Those whom he has mentored have gone on to college
under his guidance and by his example…
